A nutritionist is a person who has studied about diet and gives people advice on how they should feed in order to stay healthy. Nutritionists have a deep understanding of the metabolism that occurs in the human body after food consumption. Food is a basic need, which no one can afford to live without. Therefore, an integrative nutritionist plays a major role in society. As a career, the job market has plenty of opportunities.

Nutritionists are aware of the type of food that every individual requires depending on the type of occupation that one is in. In general, outdoor workers have a high demand of energy as compared to those that work in door especially in offices. Therefore, their diet should consist mainly of carbohydrate. Food related disorders are common to people who are reluctant to involve a nutritionist in their life.

A nutritionist has several responsibilities including giving people advise on diet and advising on weight management plans. They also help with identification of suitable eating habits for people of various ages, different conditions, and genders. Their work responsibilities extend to helping patients through follow ups and generation of dietary plans for them to follow in order to attain set nutritional goal.

In the field of medicine, nutritionists are seen as physicians just like dentists and gynaecologists. Frequent visits to nutritionists are advised and one is advised to strictly follow the food plan designed for them. This is for the purposes of saving patients since conditions such as obesity predispose people to diseases such as stroke, heart attack among others.

Nutrition as a medical branch has several other sub branches. One category is the sports nutritionists. These ones specialize in dealing with sports person to ensure they advise them accordingly to avoid poor performance due to poor diet. Besides poor performance, wrong diets can ruin the career of a sportsperson. For example, the nutritionist can warn them about the effects of consuming too much alcohol.

The experts create awareness on the consequences of bad eating habits. The nutritionists develop a picture in the mind of their patients on habits like overeating or starving oneself while under medication. Nutritionists can also refer the patient to a psychologist as some bad eating habits are caused by stress. Thus, a psychologist is more qualified to dealing with such patients.

Nutritionists study different groups of people in society and after careful analysis, they set a preferable diet for the group. For instance, nutritionists can decide to concentrate on nursing mothers and come up with a suitable diet for them. They put in consideration factors like the age of the mother, type of birth (natural or operation), weather, and health status of the mother.

As a nutritionist, one is expected to have a good understanding of all eating disorders and their prevention. This creates a good basis when dealing with a patient as some diseases have similar features and may lead to wrong diagnosis. It is recommended to consult a nutritionist before changing diet.
