Some Basics Regarding Pelvic Physiotherapy ACT AU Residents May Find Beneficial

By Stephen Lewis

Pelvic physiotherapy is commonly prescribed for individuals with poor strength of muscles in this area. It has been established that straining is what mainly causes muscle strength to be lost. Pregnancy is among the typical situations that make the pelvic floor vulnerable because of the stress exerted on the urinary bladder during the pregnancy itself and when delivery takes place. There are several facts on pelvic physiotherapy ACT AU residents may find interesting.

Leakage of stool or urine is the most common presentation in the case where muscles of the pelvis are compromised. These are medically termed fecal and urinary incontinence respectively. Such symptoms are aggravated by strenuous manoeuvres such as during coughing or when someone laughs out loud.

Hypertonicity of pelvic floor muscles can result in lower urinary tract symptoms. Hypertonicity simply means that the tissues have become too tense. Classical lower urinary tract symptoms include urgency, increased frequency of visiting the toilet and a feeling of incomplete emptying of the urinary bladder among others. Sexual activity may also prove difficult because of pain.

Organs in the pelvis are usually held in place by muscles. These muscular structures emerge from the front, back and sides of the pelvic bone to attach to the organs. Organs that benefit from this solid support include the urinary bladder, prostate, rectum, vagina, uterus and the urethra. Surrounding the rectum and urethra, the muscles contract to ensure continence and relax to bring about urination or defecation.

Physiotherapy of muscles in the pelvic floor can be performed by either the individual themselves or a trained professional physiotherapist. The choice depends on factors such as convenience, severity of symptoms and the age of the patient. Elderly patients may not be able to the exercises on their own and often require assistance. For those who are capable, a relaxed atmosphere is key if effectiveness is to be achieved.

It is recommended that the person gets a comfortable couch where they can lie down or sit in order to perform certain exercises. These exercises are meant to subconsciously identify the abnormal tissues and subject them to the necessary form of therapy. Usually, the individual is required to contract and relax perineal muscles in a rhythmic manner until they come to a discovery. In simple words, they are supposed to hold the tissues in place as if trying to prevent passage of wind or stool. If the issue is in the urinary system, the patient has to pass and hold urine in turn. Care should be taken not to overdo this as it may result in further weakness.

When a professional sees you, the aim is to obtain a diagnosis and formulate an effective treatment plan. The professional will have to ask you certain questions in order to better understand your condition. At the very least, they will test your vaginal and rectal tone through a digital examination. Physiotherapy can be prescribed as a long term measure of achieving muscle strength.

Bear in mind that some people are more vulnerable to pelvic muscle weakness than others. Women, by virtue of going through childbirth, exert extra stress on surrounding tissues which include the bladder and vagina. The elderly population is also at risk because their muscles atrophy (reduce in bulk) as they age.
